The Feather Touch: Coaxing Edges Back

Source: Pit Crew, shared anonymously
Step: STEP 2A, Precision Peel of the Clear Inner Liner
Size used: Size 2
How it went: Recovered nearly every curled edge, as long as the peel stayed slow enough that no section of tape had rolled onto itself first.
Note: Clips are sped up to 2x. The actual peel is slower than it looks.

Intro

One of the Pit Crew sent us this one.

The adhesive border should release cleanly during the Precision Peel. Depending on the speed and angle of the peel, a section here or there may lift slightly away from the paper carrier. They found the lifted edge can be caught early and guided back down, using a touch described as feather light and applied only to the outermost edge.

We tried it across all four quadrants. The peel direction here follows the Precision Peel as written in the Instructions, around the perimeter of the adhesive border. The feather is the addition.

Quadrant 1, upper left: We roll away the liner, following the perimeter of the adhesive border rather than pulling straight up. Slow is the whole game.

Watch the outer edge as it releases. If a bit of the adhesive border lifts from the paper carrier, the next step addresses it.

A wooden toothpick, laid nearly flat, brushing the very outside edge of the lifted adhesive back down onto the paper carrier. Not a poke and not a press. Think of it as sweeping the edge downward until it settles back down.

Work in small segments at a time and follow the same path the peel just took.

A note on the tool. Whatever you use should be clean, dry, and not something the adhesive will happily grab and hold. Fingertips work for some people. We used a toothpick because it has a small contact point and lets you stay on the outermost edge without touching the rest of the border. Keep contact to that edge only.

Quadrant 2, upper right. Same sequence, peeled through and then feathered.

That rhythm is the reason this goes faster than it looks. You do not have to work in that order. Peeling a short run, feathering what lifted, then moving on keeps you closer to each section as it releases, and it may catch a lift sooner than a full pass would. Either way works. All four quadrants took under a few minutes.

The lower quadrants, right then left. Nothing changes except that you are working toward the bottom of the patch, so the hand holding it shifts. Keep the peel path on the perimeter of the border and keep the toothpick flat and gentle.

The full adhesive border with all four liner quadrants off, plus one more pass on a spot in Quadrant 1. Worth knowing that an edge can come back up after you have already settled it. A quick look around the whole border before the patch goes on the skin is cheap.

Where this does and does not help

The feather touch works on an edge that has slightly lifted. It does not work on tape that has rolled onto itself and stuck. That is the case for peeling slowly. The feather is a recovery for a small lift, not a repair.

Reminder: All clips are sped up to 2x. The actual peel is slower than it looks here.
